Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces

Are you considering orthodontic treatment to straighten your teeth or a loved one's teeth? Have lots of questions about effectiveness, affordability, and comfortability? Both traditional metal braces and Invisalign have pros and cons; ultimately you want the treatment that will achieve your goal. You wouldn’t want to be fixing your teeth again down the road.

Both Invisalign and metal braces are a form of orthodontic treatment designed to straighten teeth and improve your smile and overall oral health. Traditional braces have existed in various forms since 1728, whereas Invisalign first began use in 2000, making the history of each quite a bit different.

Traditional Braces

Traditional braces consist of metal brackets, wires, and rubber bands. The metal brackets are glued to the teeth and then tied together using wires and tiny rubber bands. In the beginning, brackets were typically brightly colored and highly noticeable, but these days you can get more subtle-colored brackets which will match the color of your teeth better.

Invisalign Aligners

Invisalign is a less noticeable option, designed to be nearly invisible. You will receive various aligner trays that will each be worn for a specific amount of time and must be worn at least 22 hours a day and should only be removed to eat, drink and clean your teeth. The clear braces are worn over teeth and gently and subtly move your teeth into the desired position. Using digital imaging, impressions are created to craft your custom aligners.

Benefits of Traditional Braces & Invisalign

In terms of benefits, Invisalign is known to be more comfortable, less noticeable and a more expensive treatment option. Certain dental conditions may stop you from being a candidate for Invisalign. Traditional braces, on the other hand, are more affordable, less expensive and can be used to correct more dental issues.
