Importance of Preventative Dental Care

While modern dentistry can fix any number of oral issues, the best way to maintain a healthy smile is to prevent those issues altogether. Between visits to your dentist, it’s important to stay on top of your oral care routine to keep your teeth problem-free.

If you’re interested in maintaining a preventative dental care routine, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Oral Hygiene

The most important thing you can do for your teeth is to make sure you’re cleaning them properly. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush that’s small enough to maneuver into all the crevices of your mouth. Brush gently, as too much force can erode your tooth enamel and cause even more issues.

Flossing often gets neglected but is essential for removing plaque and bacteria from between your teeth. When flossing, move the floss in a C-shape up and under your gums to clean them thoroughly. This shouldn’t hurt if your gums are healthy, although it might take time for them to get used to it if you haven’t done this before.

Proper Diet

In addition to keeping your teeth clean, your diet can go a long way towards preventing oral health issue. Eating foods that are high in calcium can strengthen your teeth, while crunchy foods such as apples and carrots help scrape plaque from the tooth’s surface while you’re chewing. Any foods that are high in vitamins and minerals are good for your teeth as well as your body.

Try to avoid sugary foods and drinks, as these cause tooth decay. Fizzy sodas and alcohol can erode the tooth’s enamel over time, so it’s not a good idea to consume these regularly. Chewy or hard foods can pull at dental work, possibly damaging it or cracking the tooth when you chew. Be mindful and stay away from foods that might be too hard on your teeth.

Preventative dental care is the best way to ensure your teeth stay in top shape. Your dentist will be able to answer any questions you may have about maintaining your oral health between visits. To book an appointment, call our office today!
