Dental Care for Kids

We all know that dental care is important, but did you know that kids’ dental care begins even before their teeth have come in? Dental care for kids can be tricky because they’re not yet old enough to keep up with their oral hygiene without help. Here are some important things to know about dental care for kids and how to make sure your kids’ teeth stay in great shape.

Dental Care for Babies

Before your child’s teeth come in, it’s important to maintain proper gum care to ensure that the teeth have a healthy environment to develop in. Try to gently wipe down your baby’s gums once a day with a washcloth or a bit of gauze. This keeps bacteria away from budding teeth.

The American Dental Association recommends that you should take your child for their first dental appointment either six months after the first tooth develops or before their first birthday, whichever comes first. A kid's dentist specializes in oral care for children and can help your child have a comfortable experience.

Kids’ Dental Care

Once your child’s teeth have come in, you’ll have to help them keep up a good oral hygiene routine until they’re old enough to take care of them on their own. You should start brushing your child’s teeth with a fluoride toothpaste as soon as the teeth appear. As soon as the teeth touch each other, it’s time to begin flossing.

It’s recommended that you continue taking your child for dental appointments every six months to get their teeth cleaned and ensure they’re developing correctly. Your kids’ dentist will also be able to answer any questions you have about your child’s oral health at these visits.

If you’re ready to make a dental appointment for your child, we’d be happy to have you. Call our office to schedule an appointment today!
