Answers to the Dental Questions You Forget to Ask the Dentist

For many patients, questions about your dental health probably pop in your head while you're practicing at-home dental care, however by the time you make it back to the dentist you’ve probably already forgotten. Today Renken Dentistry is going to answer some of the common answers to dental questions you forget to ask your dentist:

Is there any reason to visit the dentist more than twice a year?

For most patients, visiting the dentist twice a year is enough, however for those with high risk for tooth decay or gum disease, you may be asked to schedule more frequent appointments. These more frequent appointments will allow your dentist to monitor and manage your condition, preventing it from getting worse.

Is an electric toothbrush better than a manual?

Depending upon how you use your toothbrush and if you know how to brush properly, both a manual and electric toothbrush can work great. Electric toothbrushes however can ease the process and may even be recommended if someone has limited ability to properly brush.

What is plaque and why is it bad for you?

Plaque is sticky film made from bacteria which is constantly growing in your mouth. If not removed properly, plaque turns hard and becomes tartar, eventually leading to decay and gum disease.

What causes bad breath?

Halitosis (better known as “bad breath”) can occur for a number of reasons which include:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Leftover debris from food/beverages
  • Tobacco use
  • Certain low carb/crash diets
  • Certain medications
  • Certain diseases/disorders

I have a cavity. Why doesn’t it hurt?

Symptoms from dental complications typically aren’t experienced until the condition becomes severe enough. If you think you may have a cavity, contact our dentist today.

What if a tooth gets knocked out?

In the event a tooth becomes completely dislodged, immediately contact our emergency dentist. Clean the dislodged tooth and place it in water or milk. In certain cases the tooth may be able to be saved, in other cases treatment such as a bridge or dental implant may be necessary.

Do you have additional questions you wish you could ask your dentist? Write them down and bring them to your next appointment! The team at our dental practice is always happy to answer any questions you may have.
