Renken Dentistry in Springfield, IL uses only nitrous oxide sedation, more commonly known as laughing gas. This safe form of dental sedation is hypo-allergenic and offers no unpleasant side effects. Nitrous oxide is simple to use and highly effective for both children and adults.

Nitrous Oxide – “Laughing Gas”

The reason nitrous oxide is affectionately termed laughing gas is due to the effect is has on patients once it is inhaled. To numb pain, the dental sedation works by putting you in a euphoric state that may result in laughter. Some may find this response alarming to witness, while most find the mild hysteria amusing. Regardless of how you view the effect, nitrous oxide sedation is one of the most widely used types of dental sedation because it is very safe.

Administering Nitrous Oxide

Our Springfield dentists administer laughing gas through a mask that gets placed over your nose. The mask is attached to a device which houses and regulates a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen. You will inhale the gases and within just a few minutes, you will feel the effects of the nitrous oxide sedation.

Once your dental procedure is completed, the combination of gases is gradually reduced to oxygen alone. Nitrous oxide sedation is reversed by simply breathing normal air.

Reasons for Sedation Dentistry

At our Springfield office, we choose to offer our patients only nitrous oxide sedation for several reasons, including the following:

  • It helps put anxious patients at ease.
  • Patients are in a comfortable state, not completely unconscious.
  • We can adjust the depth of sedation, if needed, at any point during the procedure.
  • While sedated, saliva flow and the gag reflex are reduced.
  • No injection is necessary, so there are no needles involved.

These facts are all very useful when working with young kids and patients who fear needles or who don’t like being unconscious. Laughing gas helps eliminate dental anxiety by helping you feel more comfortable.
