Many patients with TMJ disorders are surprised to learn that Botox may offer effective relief from their symptoms. A Botox injection for TMJ works by relaxing the muscles in the jaw, eliminating pain, tension, and pressure. If you’ve tried other TMJ treatments without success, Botox may help. If you’d like to learn more about Botox for TMJ, contact Renken Dentistry today! We offer safe, effective care for Sherman, IL patients with TMJ disorders in a comfortable, spa-like office.
What is TMJ? The temporomandibular joint connects the jawbone to the skull and acts as a kind of hinge for your mouth. This joint can become worn and damaged over time, resulting in painful symptoms, like jaw tightness, facial pain, migraines, and lockjaw. There are several causes of TMJ, including injury to the teeth or jaw, misalignments, subconscious jaw clenching, and stress. TMJ can make many daily activities difficult and can greatly impact patients’ lives.
An Effective Treatment
Botox has shown to be very effective in treating the symptoms of TMJ. The injections work by temporarily paralyzing the jaw muscles, eliminating the unconscious jaw movements that cause pain. Only areas of the jaw that receive injections will be relaxed; you’ll be able to eat, swallow, and talk fine – and without pain. Effectively treating the symptoms of TMJ may prevent more serious issues, like worn teeth, joint deterioration, and chronic inflammation.
We offer Botox for TMJ here in our office as an outpatient procedure. Each treatment typically takes 10-30 minutes. The number of injections and treatments varies from patient to patient. Most patients experience very little discomfort from the injections, with many saying it feels similar to a bug bite or pinprick. While Botox is a great option for many patients, it may not be right for everyone. Depending on the reason you’re experiencing TMJ pain, we may suggest an alternative form of treatment such as a nightguard or orthodontics.
