If you’ve tried many treatments for TMJ (temporomandibular joint) symptoms without success, you may want to consider Botox. Botox is commonly known for its cosmetic properties, but it also helps sore, tense facial muscles relax. While the results aren’t permanent, it’s often enough to break the cycle of chronic pain that can contribute to TMJ symptoms. We will evaluate your symptoms and come up with a customized treatment plan. At Renken Dentistry, we’re proud to be able to offer this effective, alternative treatment for our Rochester, IL patients. If you’d like to find out if a Botox for TMJ is right for you, contact us today to schedule a consultation.
What is TMJ?
The temporomandibular joint connects the jawbone to the skull on either side of the face. This joint acts as a hinge, and is responsible for the movement of the lower jaw. This joint can become overworked or damaged in a number of ways, resulting in muscle tension, tightness, and pain commonly referred to as TMD or TMJ. Patients with TMJ issues may have difficulty eating, talking, and sleeping due to the discomfort.
Some of the other symptoms of TMJ include:
- Aching pain in or around the ear
- Facial pain
- Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth
- Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints
- A clicking or grating sensation while opening your mouth or chewing
Botox for TMJ works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles of the jaw. This helps to reduce unconscious movements that cause pain like teeth clenching or grinding. It also gives painful, overworked muscles a chance to relax. Botox is a non-surgical procedure that can be done quickly at our office. It generally takes between 10-30 minutes and is virtually painless. Most of our Rochester, IL patients tell us it feels similar to a pinprick.
Some cases of TMJ have clear causes, while others are a bit of a mystery. Dental alignment issues can cause TMJ, as can chronic teeth grinding or jaw clenching. For alignment issues, we may also recommend orthodontics. If you tend to grind or clench your teeth at night, we may provide you with a mouth guard to protect your teeth and take some of the strain off your jaw. As a full-service dental office, we offer comprehensive services to help you look and feel your best. Whether you need a Botox injection for TMJ, dental fillings, teeth whitening, or a crown, we’re confident you’ll love coming to our friendly office.
